Chapter 9: The Sickness

I come to my senses, my head swirling, and my body numb, but that all leaves me once I make out who’s approaching me. His face is marred and contorted, and his eyes are soulless. Black. The demon hobbles over to me, his crimson robe in tatters and reeking of sulfur and rotting eggs. As a whole, he appears to be decaying, but I know that isn’t quite the case. “It’s you,” I say with a growl. “Broselvia.”

“At one point, yes, many years ago, but I have become something more.”

“More? You’re a demon.” I try to force myself forward, but the shackles around my wrists keep me bound to the wall.

“I am a demon, indeed, and I’ve never felt better.”

“You gave up your humanity!”

“If giving up your humanity is all it takes to become a demon, the world is filled with them. I remember what they did to me…how they mocked me due to my condition. I killed them. Gladly. I was fearful, but in time, I began to revel in it. I was doing those around me a service. I took their cruelty and turned it into something beautiful. It was the ultimate revenge.”

Broselvia smiles and an assortment of jagged, rotting teeth emerge.

Damn it, this is bad.

I know what he wants. He wants to drain me like he did the others all those years ago…he wants to be beautiful again, and for that, he needs souls.

“But was it right?” I continue to work at my restrains, but Broselvia doesn’t seem to care. In the space behind him I can see my stuff lying on a table next to his mirror.

“It doesn’t matter if it was right or wrong. They deserved to die. All of them. Every last one,” he says as he grabs the mirror from the table. “Just like you. You thought you were being noble, but really, setting yourself up to get left behind was merely your way of ensuring your death. You wanted this. Any other person would have run for their lives.”

“Maybe I’m just not a coward.” I snarl.

“That could be the case.” Broselvia turns back to me, mirror in hand. He spins it in a taunting manner, but I don’t flinch. Thankfully, both sides are closed. “We’ll soon find out.”

“How?” I ask. The more he talks, the more time I have to figure a way out of this mess.

“I was reborn through this very mirror that I hold, and in a way, we’ve become one.”

Okay, so if I destroy the mirror, he goes along with it. Good.

“You already know my secret if you know who I am. No need in being bashful.” He laughs as he steps closer. “The mirror separates your soul from your body, but there’s more, something else. The best part, really. Go on, ask me.”

“I would, but you’re so ugly, I can’t think straight.”

“Do you really think that name calling will work on me? Are you hoping that I somehow lose my temper and you break free? You have high hopes if you think I’m that dumb.
